Boat trailers
Boat trailers come in many sizes and shapes. Some boats come with their
own trailers while you may have to purchase a trailer for others. You
should have a solid knowledge of the length and weight of your boat
when purchasing a trailer. Common sizes include those built for 15-foot
boats or larger and 14-foot boats and smaller.
All boat trailers must be licensed and have operational lighting systems.
Check your local motor vehicle department for requirements and laws
governing the operation of trailers – they vary from state to
state. Make sure the trailer is big enough for the boat with rollers
adjusted properly.
Some tips for loading boat trailers:
• The center of gravity should be kept low for best handling.
• Approximately 60 percent of the boat’s weight should be
positioned on the front of the trailer and 40 percent on the rear.
• Make sure the safety chains and, if equipped, the safety brake
chains are connected.
